Prenatal to Kindergarten: Head Start Prepares Family of Seven for a Life of Independence

As a single mom of six, it was difficult for Marcedes to dedicate the time and find the necessary tools to individually prepare all of her children for their future in elementary school. Marcedes was working hard and doing her best, but she knew she needed some support. When her caseworker suggested Community Action of Allegan County’s (CAAC) Head Start and Early Head Start programs, enrolling her children in the free preschool and home-based support programs seemed like a no brainer. “I absolutely love these programs. My kids have had such amazing growth with speech and independence,” said Marcedes regarding the benefits of CAAC’s Head Start Program.

It has been five years since Marcedes and her family first learned about Head Start and they are still seeing the benefits of the program’s curriculum. Marcedes views the teachers and support staff as extended family and always feels welcomed. Her children look forward to going to the classroom each day and have made incredible progress. Marcedes recalls being shocked how well her two-year-olds could talk and credits the children’s Early Head Start Teachers and Curriculum for their development. When asked what her life would be like if she had not enrolled her children in CAAC’s Head Start programs she said, “My life would be chaos. I say that with honesty, it’s hard to give them the attention they need at this important learning stage.”

She recommends the program to anyone who qualifies. Registration for the 2020-2021 school year opens March 1. For more information visit Community Action’s website, or call 269.673.5472 x237. You can also visit to complete an online placement form.
